I had used this book in a class back in the day and felt inclined to read through it again to see if it can be recommended to others as an introductory book. It is an informative book but I don't think it is good on its own for people who have no prior knowledge of Islam.
The best intro to Islam I've read.
Good intro to Islam. However, the brevity of this volume means that descriptions and analyses of complex ideological and political factions within Islam are sacrificed into brief paragraphs.
This book filled in a lot of blank that I had about the life of Muhammad, how Islamic religious texts are organized and the Shia/Sunni division. Very basic and decently written.
Arabic was a well known and very influential German Orientalist and scholar, who wrote extensively on Islam and Sufism She was a professor at Harvard University from 1967 to 1992 1939 1941 1943 1941 1945 1995 .
