    • This exciting coming of age tale among the stars really explores what it's like to be an introvert that still needs people. Jem is a young man whose adopted patron has left him with a good education, a well founded route through the inhabited start systems in which to ply his trade, and a trading ship - the Scarlet Tanager - to do it in if he can keep it.The story is fun and engaging. You discover the star lanes, stations, and hazards of space travel as the main character experiences his first s [...]

    • Nice, Solid Character-Driven SciFi StoryAuthored by Miss Cedar Sanderson, “Tanager’s Fledglings (The Tanager Book 1),” is a simple, nice, solid character-driven SciFi story. A young man, Jem, the MC, rescued as an orphan, from enduring a childhood of brutality, violence, and deprivation on a dystopian planet, by a merchant freighter captain, finds himself at the helm of the trader’s vessel, the “Scarlet Tanager.” His benefactor, a somewhat grumpy, sly, trustworthy merchant, a surroga [...]

    • I obtained this book through the Kindle Unlimited program.Sanderson is known for her beautiful characters and the realistic way in which they manage unrealistic situations. This is no exception; it's a well-executed coming-of-age-in-space-with-a-bassett-hound story.Jem was picked up by Walter when he had absolutely run out of luck, and found himself gradually learning to respect and love the old man. It's still a shock to him to find that he has become the master of the ship.Walter has left him [...]

    • Worth touch-typing this review 3 timesThis is my third try writing up a recommendation. My Kindle is determined to randomly eat them and make me start over. Hah! This book is too good not to stick it out. TL'DR: If you're old enough to remember Andre Norton, this is as good as her best stuff. Longer letter later: The universe of galactic traders, some of whose routes take them out to places on the fringe, where weird stuff happens, combined with the incredibly dangerous job of carving out a livi [...]

    • Enjoyable coming-of-age story in an interesting milieu; an interstellar trading route allows the author the chance to complicate her young protagonist's life with a variety of planetary and space station cultures, so there's always something new around the corner. Likable characters and colorful settings carried this book until the hero meets serious challenges. On first reading I thought the opening chapters were a tad slow, but when the action started up I realized they were important for esta [...]

    • Very enjoyableBorderline Mary Sue main character, but then everything is well sourced. By that I mean, he is very capable but young, with a complicated background that turns what would otherwise be an unlikely character into into a likable one.One minor continuity issue: using water for a shower and the planet Lokimething in there felt tangled. It doesn't really break the flow, it just confused me for a moment as to what season he expected or something. In some ways it reminds me of Nathan Lowell [...]

    • Ths was really good, didn't want it to endMost books, I start hoping for the end to come soon, but I kept peeking at the percentage and getting sadder the closer I came to the end. The stuff about Jade seems weird till you realize their is a prequel which I guess explains the stuff that gets omitted.

    • Enjoyed it. I very much hope the author keeps this series going. I got hooked early on. On the plus side for me was the fact there were very few typos. I liked the characters and, of course, loved Eby. A nice enjoyable story.

    • If you cross "Kim", "Citizen of the Galaxy" and Nathan Lowell's "Solar Clipper" books, you kind of get this. Well worth the time. d yes, I know "Kim" & "CotG" are the same book. :)
